CinemaScape

Designer

The CinemaScape team came to design the movie theaters of 2052. In a world where theaters are on their way out, what would save the dying industry?

The solution is a communal movie viewing experience that immerses attendees while tailoring it to their personal sensory needs. Change the plot with chooser-your-own adventure films and view the film from different character perspectives with new technology of the future.

"It's everything you love about movies, with control over what you don't."

Movie-goers enter a rented bay, excited to see a new immersive theater experience. Each bay is a personalized space for groups offering customizable seating, soundproofing, and food delivery services. For those who want a more communal experience, traditional seating is still a high-end option, with recliners, motion-enabled 4DX technology, and personalized sensory settings. The innovative “parallel reality” tech allows viewers to choose different film paths or character perspectives while maintaining a personalized audio and visual experience.

Creating The Experience

The team first investigated what were the major gripes visitors had with the current cinema experience. The largest argument was they could simply watch a movie in the comfort of their homes - what made the theater special?

CinemaScape had to be designed to replicate the comfort and personal wants of home by creating individual bays where groups could discuss the movie and lounge on comfy catches just as they would in their living room. But now with immersive technology you couldn’t find in your home.

Parallel reality technology uses multi-view pixels to project different images to various viewing zones, allowing multiple people to see unique content on the same screen at the same time. It directs light from each pixel to specific angles, ensuring each viewer sees their personalized version of the content.

For future movies, this enables interactive experiences, where viewers can choose different story paths, switch to other characters' perspectives, or add subtitles without affecting others' views. Each an individual experiences while in the same room! The technology also optimizes screen visibility from any seat in a theater, ensuring a great view for everyone.
